Hello, I'm Rachael. I write and lead Humanist wedding ceremonies for couples marrying in and around York, the city I’ve called home for almost twenty years. People are drawn to York for its history, but I believe they fall in love with it because of its culture: its friendliness, its international, outward-looking nature and its truly exciting food scene!

Many of York's most-loved venues aren't licensed for legal marriage, so plenty of couples pair a short registrar appointment with a full, personal ceremony with me at the venue itself — meaning the moment everyone actually remembers happens exactly where you want it to.
My ceremonies are proudly inclusive and LGBTQ+ affirming, and I put real care into getting every detail right — including the ones that matter most to you.
Venues I love working at in and around York
Gray's Court
Tucked down a quiet cobbled lane in the very shadow of York Minster, Gray's Court has been welcoming guests since around 1080 - and it shows, in the best way! You get exclusive use of the whole house and gardens, with vows exchanged either in the Sterne Room or out on the lawn beneath the ancient city walls. It's the kind of venue that needs very little dressing up: just good writing and a ceremony that matches its quiet grandeur.

The Hospitium
Set within York Museum Gardens and overlooked by the ruins of St Mary's Abbey, this 14th century timber-framed hall is one of the most atmospheric places to marry in the city. You can have your whole day here - ceremony in the stone-floored hall downstairs, dinner in the vaulted room above, drinks, confetti and photos in the Museum Gardens.
I love delivering ceremonies here, because of the beautiful acoustics and intimate simplicity of the space. Despite its venerable age, the site is fully accessible, making for a truly inclusive wedding ceremony venue.

Merchant Taylors' Hall
A magnificent medieval guildhall inside the city walls, complete with timber beams, a roaring winter fire, and a private garden. Exclusively yours for the day, with flexible spaces for both the ceremony and reception, it suits couples who want real character and history without sacrificing an inch of comfort. This wedding venue is one for my fellow history lovers!

Sandburn Hall
Just north of the city, Sandburn's oak-framed Grand Hall looks out over lakes and fairways through floor-to-ceiling windows — elegant, spacious, and full of light. Couples also love the White Rose Garden for an outdoor ceremony beneath the folly. It's a venue built for a proper celebration, and I always find the scale of the room gives a ceremony real presence. This purpose-built venue is also fully accessible.

White Syke Fields
For couples who want their wedding to feel entirely their own, White Syke Fields is 200 acres of fields, woodland, and lake just outside York, with exclusive three-day hire of the whole site. The Piggery barn is warm and rustic; the Wheelhouse brings proper industrial drama. Nothing here is templated, which makes it one of my favourite settings for a ceremony that's genuinely unconventional. Hosts Charlotte and Stephanie are both welcoming souls and their creativity and hospitality shine through everything they do.

The Normans
An eighteenth-century working farm turned into one of Yorkshire's most distinctive barn venues, complete with exposed brick, cascading fairy lights, and a courtyard built around a water feature. The Normans is exclusively yours for the day, and its blend of rustic charm and contemporary polish makes it a lovely stage for a ceremony that's warm, personal, and unmistakably you. Owners Oliver and Laura held their own wedding ceremony here, and so the venue feels homely and is packed with thoughtful touches.

Woodstock Weddings
A beautifully restored former stable set within twenty acres of countryside, just twelve minutes from York city centre. Woodstock is exclusively yours, with heated, air-conditioned barn space, a mezzanine overlooking the dancefloor, and thoughtfully designed spaces for both ceremony and celebration under one roof. It suits couples who want countryside seclusion without sacrificing polish or comfort.
