A garden wedding in Thirsk, North Yorkshire

Georgina and Sam chose to hold their Humanist wedding ceremony in a place that was special for them: Georgina’s family home in Thirsk. As well as working with wedding suppliers who matched their values, they also got their family and friends involved, resulting in a beautiful, meaningful wedding day crammed with personal details.

The wedding ceremony took place in a leafy garden, against a backdrop of a naturalistic rustic arch and flowers created by Picked at Dawn. A small tent provided cover from any showers (sensible if you’re planning an outdoor wedding in Yorkshire!) and created an intimate feel during the ceremony.

Sam’s sister and her friends kindly played during the ceremony and reception. Georgina walked down the aisle to Wagner’s Bridal Chorus, and the couple exited to Etta James’ At Last. During the ceremony, we also enjoyed a performance of Mozart’s Divertimento in D Major, a joyful piece of music that helped set the tone of the celebrations.

Continuing the theme of family involvement, Georgina chose a reading from her mum’s favourite book, Captain Corelli’s Mandolin, read by her brother Robert.

Before their ring ceremony, Georgina and Sam read their own wedding vows to each other: personal promises reflecting what they love about each other and how they will care for each other.

A handfasting ceremony symbolised the bond between Georgina and Sam, as well as the bond between two families. There was a moment of drama over whether we could correctly tie the knot - before Georgina and Sam triumphantly waved their tied ribbon above their heads! Of course they sealed the whole thing with a kiss!

After the ceremony - didn’t I do well not to fall into the pond?!

Thanks to Georgina and Sam for letting me be part of their day and share in their ceremony, and to their families for welcoming me and participating in the ceremony.
