Hello, I'm Rachael. I write and lead Humanist wedding ceremonies for couples marrying in and around Harrogate — a town that's been quietly perfecting the art of romance since it first became a spa resort. Domed pavilions, Regency parks and crescents, ancient gritstone crags rising straight out of the moors: this is a part of Yorkshire built for lovers, and I love nothing more than writing the words to match it.
Every ceremony I create is entirely bespoke, shaped from your story rather than a script, and every couple who comes to me is welcome exactly as they are.
Why a Humanist ceremony belongs in a Harrogate fairytale
Harrogate has always known how to set the scene. It's a spa town built on a tradition of stylish hospitality, wrapped in some of the county's most romantic countryside. A Humanist ceremony gives that setting a story worth telling: no fixed script, no religious content, just your relationship beautifully told in a place that oozes gravitas.
Some of the loveliest settings around Harrogate aren't licensed for legal marriage on their own, so plenty of couples pair a short registrar appointment with a full, personal ceremony with me at the place that actually feels like the heart of their day — under a pavillion, beneath a stately oak tree, or out on open moorland with a view that looks like it came from a fantasy novel.

Places I love working at in and around Harrogate
Rudding Park
A Grade I listed Regency house set within landscaped gardens and mature parkland, with a Gothic inspired 19th-century chapel tucked into the grounds. Rudding Park suits couples who want polish without losing warmth: choose a drawing room inside the house with full-length windows overlooking the gardens, or make your vows in the chapel before the celebrations begin.
In summer months, couples can even row out to Rudding's own little island on the lake for a quiet moment together after the ceremony — the sort of detail that makes a day feel like a unique story.

The Sun Pavilion, Valley Gardens
Genuinely one of the most enchanting spots in Harrogate: an Art Deco glass-domed pavilion tucked into a private corner of the Grade II listed Valley Gardens. Marry under that dome, bathed in natural light, or out on the covered terrace overlooking the gardens. It's compact, romantic, and unmistakably elegant, especially when the light illuminates the glass dome.
Valley Gardens sit at the heart of Harrogate, meaning your guests can walk from their hotels to the ceremony venue, and the gardens provide lots of beautiful settings for wedding photography.

Almscliffe Valley
A secluded, blank-canvas field on a working farm just below the dramatic gritstone outcrop of Almscliffe Crag, complete with its own private lake and a little island at its centre. Almscliffe Valley is exclusively yours for the duration of your hire, with acres of flat ground for a tipi or marquee and no restriction on suppliers. Couples can exchange vows outdoors in several spots across the site, each framed by the crag and the open Yorkshire countryside behind. It's one of my favourite settings for a ceremony with real freedom, nothing prescribed, just land, open sky, and the two of you.
Adventurous couples can also elope at nearby Almscliffe Crag.

Harewood House & Harewood Food + Drink Project @ The Hovels
Home to the Earl and Countess of Harewood, this Grade I listed 18th-century house is one of Yorkshire's grandest settings, with interiors by Robert Adam and 140 acres of gardens designed by Capability Brown. Exchange vows in the stately Long Gallery, then step out onto the South Terrace for drinks with the lake and rolling parkland spread out below. Few venues in the county carry quite this much scale and splendour, and a ceremony written well can hold its own against every inch of it.
Alternately, couples can marry on the estate’s The Hovels, an ultra sleek stable conversion with a chic, modern feel.

Frequently asked questions
Is a Humanist ceremony legally binding in Harrogate? Not currently in England (though we’re working on it)! Most couples have a short legal registrar appointment separately, then their full, personal ceremony with me at their chosen setting — indoors or out.
Can you marry same-sex couples? Yes, always. My ceremonies are inclusive and affirming for LGBTQ+ couples, written to reflect who you both genuinely are.
Can you conduct a ceremony somewhere unconventional, like a tipi at Almscliffe Valley? Absolutely — some of my favourite ceremonies have been at blank-canvas, outdoor sites like this. If you can picture it, we can talk through how to make it work.
How far in advance should we book? As soon as your venue and date are confirmed. Harrogate's most popular venues, especially for peak season Saturdays, book up well over a year ahead.
