Marrying in the Lake District, the Humanist Way
I grew up in the Lake District, so I will gladly accept any excuse to head home - especially if it’s for a wedding ceremony! Give me open skies, green fields, dramatic mountains and sandy beaches - I may be biased, but this county has it all! What a backdrop to become husband and wife, wife and wife, husband and husband, or simply spouses, in whatever way feels most true to you.
As a Humanist celebrant, I love working in this part of the world. A Humanist ceremony is legally recognised in Scotland, and while England still requires a separate registrar appointment, more and more couples are choosing to have their heartfelt, personal ceremony led by a celebrant and treat the paperwork as a quiet formality. This means your actual wedding, the one your guests will experience, be part of and remember, is written entirely around your story, your values and your relationship, with no religious content and no script pulled from a shelf.
The Lake District's barns and estates are made for this kind of ceremony. They are relaxed enough for you to be yourselves, beautiful enough that you barely need to decorate, and flexible enough to hold a ceremony that reflects exactly who you are as a couple. Here are three of my favourites.

Eden Barn, Kirkby Stephen
Tucked into the Upper Eden Valley, right where the Lake District, the Pennines and the Yorkshire Dales meet, Eden Barn is the kind of venue that makes you fall for in love before you have even stepped inside. Down a farm track outside Little Musgrave, this 200 year old family farm hosted its first wedding when the owner’s own daughter married here, and you can feel their sense of pride. It’s not just a business: it’s home.
Exposed stone walls, a vaulted ceiling and a limestone flagged floor give the barn a beautifully authentic elegance, while outside, there’s a hand-thatched gazebo for outside ceremonies.
With 100 acres of rolling grounds to explore, there is space for all your guests to spread out and enjoy cocktail hour, golden hour photographs against the fells, or simply a quiet moment together between your ceremony and your reception.
I find Eden Barn particularly special for Humanist ceremonies because it offers real choice. Whether you picture an intimate elopement for the two of you or a full celebration for up to 144 guests, the setting flexes to meet your vision. It is a wonderful venue for couples who want their ceremony to feel personal, unhurried and completely their own.
Good to know: Eden Barn sits just off the M6 and A1, so it is easily reached from across Cumbria, Yorkshire and the North, while still feeling wonderfully remote once you arrive.

Fairbank Barn, Staveley
Between Kendal and Windermere, on a working sheep farm of 370 acres, Fairbank Barn, to my mind, Fairbank Barn is peak Lake District! The main barn is traditional Lakeland stone with exposed beams and generous windows that flood the space with light, even on one of Cumbria's more changeable afternoons, while the adjoining spaces give your day a natural flow from ceremony to drinks to celebration (and shelter from that famous Cumbrian rain)!
What makes Fairbank truly memorable, though, is the setting beyond the barn doors. The farm is home to its own private tarn, and couples can hold their ceremony beside the water, with nothing but rolling fells and the odd sheep for company. It is the sort of backdrop that turns your ceremony photographs into something you will want framed on the wall for decades.
For a Humanist ceremony, Fairbank's blank canvas approach is a gift. You are free to bring your own suppliers, your own styling and your own vision, and I always encourage couples to consider where in the grounds actually feels like them, whether that is under the barn's beams, in the courtyard, or somewhere quieter with the fells as your only witness.

Knott Estate, Farleton, near Carnforth
You should know by now that I love a barn wedding - here’s another gorgeous place to marry and celebrate in style! If you want your wedding day to feel like an intimate countryside retreat, Knott Estate is worth a visit. Set within 200 acres near Farleton Knott in the South Lakes, this exclusive-use venue combines a beautifully restored barn with a cosy five-bedroom country house, meaning you and your nearest and dearest can take over the whole place for your celebration and truly feel at home.
The main ceremony barn is built from timber and stone, with high ceilings and original character that needs very little styling to feel special. Outside, the grounds are gently romantic with a charming apple tree, a cosy 17th century cottage covered in climbing greenery, a nearby stream and views that make an outdoor ceremony feel like the most natural thing in the world.
As a Humanist celebrant, I love that Knott Estate is a genuine blank canvas. There is no pressure to fit a house style. Whether your ceremony is reflective and quiet or full of laughter and readings from the people who know you best, the space simply holds it. Dogs are welcome too, which always makes me smile, since so many couples want their four-legged family member close by as they exchange vows.
Good to know: Knott Estate is an intimate, exclusive-use setting, ideal for couples planning a smaller, more concentrated celebration with close family and friends rather than a large-scale affair. Adventurous couples can go up onto Farleton Knott for golden hour photos on the dramatic, limestone pavements overlooking gorgeous scenery.
